Sanctions have been linked to shipping since ancient Greece, but recent geopolitical events have reintroduced them in the shipping industry. This address explores the concepts, impact, and contractual mechanisms used by industry players to manage sanctions, examining recent cases on the use and efficacy of such mechanisms, including the Singapore Court of Appeal’s decision in Kuvera Resources Pte Ltd v JPMorgan Chase Bank, NA [2023] 2 SLR 389.
