This event is organised by NUS Centre for International Law. MARPOL is the key global treaty to prevent ship pollution, covering oil, chemicals, sewage, garbage and air emissions. Adopted in 1973 and enforced from 1983 after a 1978 update, it now includes multiple annexes and stricter rules in special areas. Widely adopted, it governs most global tonnage and continues evolving with new regulatory approaches like risk-based and market-based measures.
