The CPD Rules 2012 is the legislative framework of the CPD scheme. It came into operation on 1 April 2012. The CPD Rules 2012 is enacted under section 10 read with section 131 of the Legal Profession Act 1966. Amongst other things, the CPD Rules 2012 defines what a ‘CPD Activity’ is, specifies the number of CPD points which must be obtained by solicitors, and sets out the various CPD requirements that solicitors regulated under the CPD scheme must fulfil.
The CPD Guidelines 2017 supplements the CPD Rules 2012 by providing more details on the operation and interpretation of certain aspects of the CPD scheme. The CPD Guidelines 2017 is issued pursuant to rule 14 of the CPD Rules 2012. Amongst other things, the CPD Guidelines 2017 specifies categories of activities eligible for claims of private CPD points, explains the operation of the Attendance Policy, and specifies how CPD points are calculated.
The MEC Guidelines 2024 supplements the CPD Rules 2012 by providing more details on the mandatory category of CPD activities, i.e., activities on ethics and professional standards. The MEC Guidelines 2024 are issued pursuant to rule 14 of the CPD Rules 2012.
